Why Contractors Choose a Drive-Over Wattle

Most sediment control barriers on a job site share the same fatal flaw: they can’t take vehicle traffic. A truck rolls over a straw wattle and it’s done — flattened, displaced, and no longer doing its job. A silt fence takes one direct hit from a skid steer and it’s down for the day.

How DuraWattle Holds Up Under Vehicle Traffic

DuraWattle’s durability under traffic comes from two design choices:

  • Foam core rebound. The sealed polyurethane foam core compresses under load and springs back to full height when the wheel moves off. Standard 12 ft sections hold up through thousands of drive-overs across a typical project lifespan.
  • UV-stabilized polypropylene shell. The outer filter fabric resists UV degradation and abrasion. Unlike straw or fiber rolls that degrade after one season, DuraWattle is rated for 3–5 years and can be reused on 70–90% of installations.

One important note: repeated turning or idling of heavy machinery directly on top of the barrier — not just driving over it — can reduce reusability. For high-traffic construction entrances, angle the wattle slightly so tires roll over rather than pivot on it.

DuraWattle has been ASTM D7351 tested, achieving 96.6% sediment retention and a clean-water flow rate of 100 gpm/ft². Those aren’t marketing numbers — they’re lab results from a third-party test facility, and they hold up in the field.

Installation for Drive-Over Applications

Setting up DuraWattle at a construction entrance or driveway cut takes about the same time as straw wattle — but stays in place far longer. Here’s the standard approach for soil and curb installs:

  1. Dig a shallow 3″ × 6″ trench on the upstream side of the barrier line.
  2. Lay the tail of the wattle in the trench — this locks it against sheet flow undermining.
  3. Pin every 4 ft with wire staples and at all section joints. Spray-paint pin locations for fast removal later.
  4. Backfill and compact over the tail.
  5. Connect sections end-to-end for a continuous barrier — no gaps, no leakage points.

For hard surface applications (concrete aprons, asphalt, curb faces), DuraWattle anchors with 2¾″ concrete screws through a steel strip pressed over the tail — no trenching required.

Ships compressed at 1,800 ft per pallet. A single 300 ft bundle fits in a pickup truck and can be carried by one person. Once inflated on site, it installs fast and stores flat when the job is done.
