Frequently Asked Questions

What is DuraWattle made of, and how does it filter sediment?
  • It consists of a plastic-sealed polyurethane foam core and an outer layer of UV-stabilized polypropylene monofilament filter fabric.
  • The nonpermeable foam core blocks sediment buildup, while water passes through the fabric filter at the base.
How effective is its filtration performance?
  • It offers a clean-water flow rate of approximately 100 gpm/ft² and achieved 96.6 % sediment retention and 58 % turbidity reduction in ASTM testing.
Is DuraWattle durable and reusable?
  • Designed for heavy equipment traffic—fully rebounds after vehicles pass over it.
  • Can be reused in 70–90 % of installations; lifespan is typically 3–5 years, sometimes longer under favorable conditions.
Will it maintain barrier height under traffic?
  • Maintains shape and height when driven directly over; heavy machinery may reduce lifespan if wheels idle or turn on it.
How is it installed?
  • On soil or curbs: Dig a 3″ × 6″ trench upstream, place the tail, pin every 4 ft and at section joints, spraypaint pin locations for easy removal, backfill over the tail.
  • On hard surfaces: Clear debris, fold tail over a steel strip or wood plank, anchor with 2¾″ concrete screws every 4 ft after drilling pilot holes.
  • Sections interlock via fabric sleeves for a continuous barrier.
How long are the sections and how much do they weigh?
  • Standard sections for perimeter control, measure 12 ft and weight 5lbs
  • 18’ sections optional for driveway sections, wight 7.5lbs
How easy is it to transport?
  • 12 sections ships compressed; six 300ft, 100lb bundles (totaling 1,800 ft) fit on a pallet.
  • 18’ sections ship in 5 bundles of 360’, 120lb bundles (totaling 1,800 ft) fit on a pallet.
  • A 300ft bundle fits in a pickup truck and is light enough for manual handling.
  • Once inflated, it occupies more volume but remains lightweight and transportable.
How is it maintained and removed?
  • After rain, simply shovel sediment off the upstream side.
  • To remove from soil, pull painted pins and lift the barrier; from hard surfaces, remove screws and hardware.
Does it absorb hydrocarbons or metals?
  • DuraWattle is not designed to absorb hydrocarbons or dissolved metals; use additional BMPs if needed.
What are its limitations?
  • Avoid using it as the sole control on heavily sloped sites with runoff collecting at a single low point; consider adding extra BMPs.
  • Repeated heavy vehicle turning or stopping on top can tear the barrier.
  • Sites with high traffic may reduce the ability to reuse the wattle.
How do I set up a test sample or get a quote?
  • You can request a free sample pack containing two 12 ft sections and a 2 ft sample
  • For pricing, contact the company for a customized quote.
